December has three popular modern birthstones: tanzanite, zircon and turquoise. Their different appearances and care needs give you useful choices for a birthday gift.
Tanzanite: blue-violet colour
Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite. Its appearance can include blue and violet, with colour changing as the viewing direction changes. Ask about treatment and discuss a suitable setting, especially for a ring exposed to knocks.
Zircon: a natural gem with lively reflections
Natural zircon is different from cubic zirconia. Blue zircon can be an appealing option when you enjoy bright reflections and a blue colour. Ask about treatment and protect it from hard blows and rubbing against other jewellery.
Turquoise: an opaque blue-to-green gem
Turquoise offers a different appeal from transparent faceted gems. Compare colour, matrix patterns and surface condition. Ask whether it is untreated, stabilised, dyed or another material represented as turquoise.
Our original examples
