You’ve found an estate ring you love, and the listing says HK 11. Will it fit? Start with a ring that sits comfortably on the same finger and hand. Its inside diameter in millimetres gives you something you can compare with the seller’s measurements.
Measure a ring you already wear
- Choose a round ring that fits the intended finger. A band similar in width to the one you’re considering makes the best comparison.
- Lay it flat against a millimetre ruler. Line up zero with one inside edge and read the opposite inside edge, straight across the centre. Leave the metal itself out of the measurement.
- Turn the ring a quarter turn and measure again. If an older band gives two different readings, it may be out of round. Bring it to a jeweller so they can check it on a ring stick.

Try a ring gauge on your finger
If you have a set of sizing rings, start with one that goes over your knuckle with gentle resistance and sits comfortably at the base. Try the sizes on either side. Use the hand you’ll wear the ring on, and check again later if your fingers are unusually hot or cold.
At a jeweller’s, ask to try a gauge close to the width of your chosen band. A broad band covers more of the finger and can feel snugger than a slender ring with the same opening. Ask the jeweller to write down both the size and the system used, such as HK or US.

For example, an inside diameter of 17.3 mm corresponds to approximately HK 16 or US 7 on this chart. HK and US conversions can vary slightly between gauges. If your measurement falls between rows, tell the jeweller the measurement you actually took.

How to read an estate ring listing
Our 3.02 ct natural diamond ring in 18K rose gold is listed as HK 11. On the chart above, that’s about 15.7 mm across the opening, or US 5. If your own ring measures close to 15.7 mm, the next step is to try the estate ring on and see how its band and setting sit on your hand.
Before buying a ring that needs altering, ask whether that particular piece can be resized. Stones set around the band, an engraving inside it, an earlier repair or a shank worn thin can affect what a jeweller can safely alter. A carved, one-piece jade ring has no metal shank to adjust, so fit is especially important.
Considering a ring from our collection? Arrange a viewing at 9 Perak Road and bring a ring that fits. For a piece you already own, ask us about resizing or repair. Send a photo, the intended finger and the size or inside diameter you measured.
