Gemstones are beautiful yet mysterious as they are formed over billions of years, buried deep within the earth. Since ancient days, gemstones are sought after for their beauty and perceived value due to its rarity. "How do you choose gemstones?" is a common question asked by gem lovers.
Here, we'd like to share some tips with you and summarize them into 4Ps:
1. Purpose
What are you buying the gemstones for? Is it for yourself or a gift for someone? If it is for yourself, are you buying it for wearing, collecting or investing? The purpose will help you decide on the quality of the gemstone you need and the budget you set for your purchase. For daily wear, you can go for beautiful yet affordable gems. Gems of more affordable prices may be of lower quality in terms of cut, color and clarity, but yet looks beautiful enough to wear as accessories. For investment purpose, you will need to make sure your gem comes with a certificate issued by a credible gem laboratory.
2. Place
Where are you buying the gemstones from? The place that you buy gemstones from can give you hints of the seller's credibility. This is especially something to be aware of when you are buying gemstones overseas. Unless you have been referred to someone you can trust, never go to dodgy places to buy gemstones where you don't feel peaceful or comfortable.
3. People
Who are you buying the gemstones from? Is the sales person knowledgeable? Is he or she able to answer your questions satisfactorily? Do you feel pressured to buy? At any time when you feel that the sales person is pushy and hard selling, you should walk away. Never buy anything out of pressure or you will regret later on.
4. Price
Is the gemstone or gemstone jewellery reasonably or exorbitantly priced? How can you tell? By doing some window shopping and online research, you can have some idea of the price range. Do take note that the comparison should be apple to apple, comparing within similar gemstone types and quality. Don't be in a hurry to buy. Take time to find the gemstone that you really like and at a price that is worth its true value.
Final point to note, it will be good to equip yourself with some knowledge through reading gemstone books and workshops, so that you will be able to shop with more confidence.
